(4) The Voice of the Seven Thunders (10:1–7)

1Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars. 2He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke. 4And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven say, "Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down."

5Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven. 6And he swore by him who lives for ever and ever, who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it, and said, "There will be no more delay! 7But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets."

Chapter 9 concludes with the sounding of the sixth trumpet. The seventh trumpet announcing Christ's reign over all of the cosmos will not be heard until the fifteenth verse of chap. 11. Consequently, Rev 10:1–11:14 constitutes one of the interludes that occur periodically in the Apocalypse of John. The two events composing this interlude do not appear to be intimately connected. The first event is a vision in which John himself becomes a player, while the second focuses on the appearance of two remarkable witnesses and the bizarre events that encompass their lives and ministries. But perhaps this initial appearance of unrelatedness is not the case. Although the subject matter of the tenth chapter concerns John, apparently the vision involving the seer himself serves as a bridge to introduce the two witnesses whose work is the proclamation of the coming judgment of God (see chap. 11). Since this assigned ministry obviously occurs during the midst of the tribulation period, the tenth chapter should be viewed as an explanation for events transpiring during the tribulation period, which makes this period more than just the judgment of God on the earth.

Chapter 10 chronicles the appearance of the mighty angel, the sounding of seven peals of thunder, the beginning of the end and an encounter of John with the angel bearing the little scroll. The unique feature of the participation of John in his own vision is not without precedence in the Bible or even in the dreams of humans in any era.

10:1–4 The first section of chap. 10 focuses on the appearance of a mighty angel who comes down from heaven. The depiction of his appearance suggests high rank, a position of honor, and a radiant glory.
